Is there such a thing as self-compassion?

If you ask my friends, I would hope they’d describe me as a compassionate person and someone that shows empathy in situations where they need my help and support.

Very rarely so we acknowledge that we can be self-compassionate too.

When I set this website up, I was determined to use it to ways to become less reliant of the compassionate of others and focus on elements of my life that can encourage my own self esteem and self compassion.

Do you tell yourself that you’re doing well? Do you remind yourself that you need time to relax and be content.

Here’s my few tips on how you can show yourself more self-compassion:

  1. Stop holding yourself to unrealistically high standards and acknowledge the achievements you make at whatever level you consider they are at.
  2. Don’t go to the automatic negative thoughts in situations and begin to focus on the positives instead
  3. Practice mindfulness and bring your attention to the present and stop dwelling on the past.
  4. Remember that you’re not alone, with 1 in 4 people struggling with mental health and acknowledge our shared humanity.

There are several ways to get help and I would encourage you to do so.

I’m not a qualified mental health worker and if you are struggling then there are plenty of organisations that can help you (they’re amazingly approachable!).

  • Samaritans – 116 123 (free 24/7)

You might also want to look at the several mindfulness apps for your smart phones:

  • Calm
  • Headspace

Just search your phones App Store to find them. They’re usually free for the initial downloads and use.
