What's Actually Driving You - And Is It Being Used?

Motivational Maps is a 12-minute diagnostic that shows you exactly what motivates you at work right now, how satisfied that motivation is, and what to do about the gap. Not personality, and not therapy. A performance tool with a number attached.

Motivation works differently depending on where you sit.

You Report to Someone

You’re in back-to-back meetings all day and doing the actual thinking at 10pm. You’re covering work your team should be doing because it’s faster than explaining it. You say yes when you mean no. You’re performing at 100% on the outside, and the audit score would tell you exactly how much of that is real.

You Answer to No One

No one above you to notice you’re stretched. No one else carrying what you’re carrying. Every decision runs through you. The business runs on your energy. Twelve minutes tells you exactly what’s fuelling it and what’s draining it.

Let's Be Clear About What Motivation Is About

Motivational Maps® gets mistaken for three things it isn’t. Here’s the difference.

Not a Personality Test

Personality is fixed. Motivation moves. Motivational Maps measures what's driving you right now, and it changes as your career, role, and circumstances change - which is exactly why it's worth revisiting, not filing away.

Not a Wellbeing Programme

This isn't about how you feel. It's about how you perform. If your top motivators aren't being met, your decision-making, energy, and output all drop, whether you notice it or not. Wellbeing is a by-product. Performance is the point.

Not an Engagement Survey

A survey tells you the temperature of the room. Motivational Maps tells you why it's cold, exactly who feels it, and precisely what would warm it up for that person. Data, not a mood reading.

The Gap Nobody's Measuring

Most leaders and founders can tell you their targets, numbers, and deadlines. Almost none can tell you what’s actually motivating them to hit any of it, or whether that’s currently being satisfied. That gap stays invisible until it isn’t. You can perform at 100% on the outside while running at 70% underneath for long enough that it starts to look normal.

Nobody does this to you. Motivation comes from within: your environment, your role, and your own choices either feed it or starve it. Motivational Maps shows you which one is happening, with a number attached, instead of a vague sense that something’s off.

Gary's Own Map

  • Top motivator: Spirit (29)
  • Second: Creator (28)
  • Third: Searcher (24)
  • Lowest: Builder (11)

With a top ‘Spirit’ Motivator – Gary performs best with autonomy, independence, making his own calls. It’s the reason he runs his own business rather than working inside someone else’s.

This isn’t a personality quirk, it’s the reason certain decisions have always felt right and others have always felt wrong, long before he had language for why. Once you can see it in numbers, you stop guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What if I don't have time for another assessment?

It’s 12 minutes, once. The debrief is the part that matters, and that’s built around your time, not a training course you have to clear a day for.

Is this like a soft skills thing?

It isn’t. It’s a performance diagnostic with a numerical output. What you do with the result is entirely practical: decisions, delegation, energy, focus. Nothing about the process is soft.

What if I know what motivates me already?

Most people know roughly. Motivational Maps tells you precisely, in rank order, with a score attached to whether it’s currently being met. The precision is what makes it actionable rather than just interesting.

What if something comes back low? Does that say something bad about me?

No. Your motivators aren’t a reflection of your skill or your character. There’s no better or worse motivator to have. A low score just means that particular driver isn’t currently in play for you, which is useful to know, not something to defend.

How is this different from something my HR team has already run?

Most workplace tools measure engagement or personality. This measures something neither of those touch: what’s actually driving you, individually, right now, and whether it’s being satisfied. It’s a different layer entirely.
